Biofilm Testing Projects

The CBE has a special laboratory for training biofilm researchers and performing specialized industrial testing projects. The Biofilm Systems Training Laboratory (BSTL) is a research, testing, and educational laboratory that trains top-flight undergraduate interns in the theory and methodology of biofilm growth and quantification. These interns then work with experienced research engineers and technicians on industrial projects, such as biocide and anti-fouling surface efficacy testing. The BSTL specializes in developing standard testing protocols to quantify biofilm on a variety of surfaces and under a host of growth conditions. Because these standard protocols result in repeatable experiments, they lend themselves to the testing of both innovative anti-fouling surfaces and biocides which industry has developed. BSTL engineers design tests with industry scientists to provide proof-of-principle data for executive decisions on product development and marketing strategy.
