__________________________________________
Dear Readers,
Our good friend and biofilm colleague Dr. Peter Gilbert passed away August 18th, 2008.
He was Professor of Microbial Physiology and Director of the Biofilm
Research Group within the School of Pharmacy, University of
Manchester, UK. He published widely in the field of
biocide action and resistance mechanisms and also in the general
area of microbial biofilms and drug resistance. He supervised the
research of more than sixty graduate students, many of whom have now
established their own academic research groups in the UK and USA. He
was the editor of eight research texts in these areas, and published
over 500 papers, reviews and book articles since 1980. He was a
regular speaker at national and international scientific meetings.
Peter was a keynote speaker at a CBE Technical Advisory Conference
in 2005 where he engaged the audience with his characteristic
(unique) blend of scientific insight, passion, humor, and
irreverence. He worked with several CBE member companies over the
years. The world of antimicrobial and biofilm research lost a
leading thinker, spokesman, and personality with Peter’s passing.

Outreach
LEAP Instructors
CBE students Natasha Mallette, Logan Schultz, and Trevor Zuroff
volunteered to instruct middle schoolers participating in the
Learning Engineering by Application Program (LEAP), July
7-8, 2008. LEAP offers hands-on activities in math and science such
as building LEGO robots, designing Web pages and viewing how
engineering applies to everything from building an iPod to dealing
with pollution. LEAP is available to students attending a GEAR UP
(Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs)
school. GEAR UP is funded by the Department of Education to increase
the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and
succeed in postsecondary education.

Education
NSF Advance Seminar Participant
Laura Jennings, visiting PhD student from Cornell University, was
recently selected to attend the NSF Advance Seminar, October 5-7,
2008 at Rice University. The seminar workshop “Negotiating the Ideal
Faculty Position,” is designed for female PhDs and post docs who are
interested in pursuing an academic career in science, engineering,
or psychology. Only 75 out of 1000 applicants were selected to
attend. Applicants selected to participate receive airfare, hotel
accommodations, and meals provided at no cost to the participants.
Congratulations, Laura!
