A conceptual cartoon to illustrate the structural heterogeneity of biofilms. Depending on the surrounding environment, biofilms can contain bacterial clusters (or microcolonies), channels or pores through which water can flow (carrying nutrients through the biofilm), void areas within biofilms (no longer) populated with bacteria, and streamers created by bulk fluid flow.
